Huili School Nantong: Purpose-Built for Holistic Learning

In 1856, Queen Victoria laid the cornerstone for Wellington College in England. In so doing, she was setting the course more than a century and a half of academic excellence through holistic education. This September, Wellington College China will continue to carry this mantle when it opens Huili School Nantong.

At Huili School Nantong, we will create the conditions for our pupils to flourish. But 'flourishing' does not just mean achieving high marks and great examination results. Our holistic, bilingual education model will help our pupils acquire the skills needed to thrive in the wider world. And these skills are acquired as much in the classroom as they are on the sports field, on the stage or in the art studio. As such, our new campus will be purpose-built to make your child a well-rounded, bilingual and successful global citizen.

Huili School Nantong's campus will cover an area of 80,000 square meters and can serve the needs of 2,000 pupils aged from 3 to 18. As the group's flagship boarding school, it will be able to accommodate 800 pupils living on campus. Pupils will benefit from world-class facilities as well: 11 functional structures, including teaching buildings, multi-functional buildings, a theatre, dormitories, libraries, indoor sports halls, swimming pools and football and rugby pitches.

Huili School Nantong will feature four dedicated buildings for its Nursery, Primary, Junior High and Senior High Schools. These are spacious, open learning environments that are equipped with state-of-the-art education technologies.  For our Nursery pupils, learning spaces will not be restricted by walls or buildings. The children will be encouraged to flow freely inside and outside, learning different things from both environments. For our older pupils, there will be specialist teaching rooms for science, art and textiles, design technology and computing. This will enable them to explore subject matters in greater depth and discover their passions. We firmly believe in the importance of learning by doing at Huili. Many of subjects will therefore provide pupils with hands-on experiences that integrate both theory and practice. 

Moreover, our two libraries provide a wealth of media in both Chinese and English that will support our pupils' independent learning and cultivate a passion for enquiry and a love of reading. Work areas will also facilitate group discussions and collaborations on projects.

The arts are an essential component to a holistic education. They encourage creativity and teach our pupils the value of personal expression. There is perhaps no clearer expression of the importance of the arts at Huili School Nantong than our stand-alone theatre. 

It is built for an audience capacity of 600, and its 200-square-metre stage is suitable for a wide range of musical and dramatic performances. Pupils will have the opportunity to put on high-quality productions using professional-grade sound and lighting systems and even an orchestra pit. 

For rehearsals and class instruction as well as smaller, more intimate performances, there is the Black Box Theatre, which is also fitted out with professional recording facilities. 

Here, Huili's budding recording artists, sound engineers and producers can learn how to ply their craft with hands-on experience.

We enrich the mind through academics. We nourish the soul through the arts. We condition the body through sports. Physical education and sport will therefore be an important part of Huili School Nantong life. Our world-class facilities will be able to accommodate a wide variety of sporting pursuits with outdoor pitches for football and rugby, plus a six-lane 400m running track. We will also have an indoor, double-sized sports hall, a swimming pool and a gym.

Our indoor sports hall will be world-class, featuring safe, stable and flexible equipment and will meet the non-slip requirements for professional sports competitions. The space will be fully modular to accommodate a wide variety of sports with electric basketball hoops, and removable badminton and volleyball nets. For competitions, there will be retractable seating, a high-quality sound system, high-definition LED displays and professional-grade scoring systems.

Swimming will play an important role in life at Huili Nantong as well. Our campus will feature two swimming pools, one for our youngest learners, who will take mandatory weekly lessons with our team of qualified instructors. For our more advanced swimmers, we will have a 25m, eight-lane pool equipped with touch timers, starting platforms and diving platforms that meet professional standards.
