Dialogues with Hiba Nantong World Scholar's Cup participants

09 Sep 2024

Hiba Academy Nantong sent 12 pupils to participate in the World Scholar's Cup global competition in Dalian. They stood out among nearly 1000 students from around the world and won 36 awards, with two teams being invited to the World Scholar's Cup Yale Championship.

The World Scholar's Cup is a diverse and challenging competition that includes events like the knowledge challenge, team debate, collaborative writing, and quiz. The competition language is English and it tests the breadth of pupils' knowledge, the depth of their thinking, and their public speaking abilities. The competition also broadens pupils' horizons, encourages them to pay attention to global issues, think critically, and be culturally inclusive.

According to the description of Hiba Academy Nantong pupils who participated in the competition, in the usual CCA courses, pupils have already carried out in-depth exploration and competition in the six disciplines of Science, Sociology, History, Art, Literature and general studies through the unique learning methods of interdisciplinary and thematic inquiry.

According to Ms. Nade, our CCA teacher and the team leader for this event, every team debate rehearsal before the competition was conducted as a practical exercise. The primary goal of the training is to help pupils become familiar with the basic framework of debating, master specific debating skills such as using dependable data to argue and spot the weaknesses in the opponent's argument to refute. Furthermore, it also cultivates the core competencies of team collaboration, international communication, innovation, and reasoning amongst pupils, shaping them into future scholars and leaders.

Yannis, a pupil from G7, shared that this training compelled him to step out of his comfort zone, overcome his shyness and nervousness, and improve his ability to build a debating framework. Even though his team lost in the first round of debates, he adjusted his debating stance in a timely manner, worked with his teammates, and eventually stabilized output during the team debate event, highlighting their strengths. His team won the Gold Award in the team debate event and other awards, successfully advancing to the World Scholar's Cup Yale Championship.
