Generation Z, often referred to as the "Net Generation," "Internet Generation," and "Digital Media Indigenous," is the generation that was born between 1995 and 2009 and was raised with access to the Internet. They have reaped the benefits of the information explosion and quickly assimilated the knowledge amassed by their forebears from numerous sources. They tend to be quite individualistic, fearless in their expression, and experience driven.

The important transitional period between middle school and high school has now been reached by the youngest "Z-graders" or will be reached shortly. With high school as a gateway to university, the importance of this period for your child is clear. As a result, choosing a suitable high school for your child that maximises your child's development and provides a good foundation for your child to enter the university of their choice has become a top priority for many parents.

Since the opening of school, we have received a lot of parental inquiries about the high school. As a result, we will start offering Grade 10 pupil in September a customised Pre A-Level course to aid pupils in making the transition from middle school to high school and to prepare them for the A-Level course.

A-Level

The A Level (General Certificate of Education Advanced Level) is one of the most mainstream international high school programmes in China, and is one of the most widely used international programmes in the world. The A-Level Certificate is used as an entry criterion for admission to almost all English-medium universities worldwide, with most top universities requiring high A-Level grades, and certain university majors requiring applicants to have certain A-level subjects.

The grading system for examination results in each subject at A-level is made up of seven  grades - A*, A, B, C, D, E and U - with A* indicating the highest grade.

In the case of Chemistry at University of Oxford, for example, applicants are required to take Chemistry and Mathematics as two of their subjects and a third subject in Science or Further Mathematics with A*, A* and A grades at A-level, which is very demanding for applicants.

The requirements vary between majors at the same university. For example, the Economics and Management at University of Oxford, does not require as many restrictions on candidates' majors as the Chemistry major. The major requires applicants to take a major in mathematics and to have an A-level grade of A*, A, A or above.

Because of the broader university education system and the deepening difficulty of knowledge, pupils are required to build a firm foundation before they can enrol. Therefore, many universities will advise or require pupils to take certain core courses when applying to certain majors. Based on the entirety of Wellington College China’s university application experience and considering the actual situation of our pupils, the academic team at Huili School Nantong has carefully tailored the curriculum to suit our pupils.

Core Curriculum

The core curriculum includes Chinese, Maths, English, Chemistry, Global Perspectives, Wellbeing and University Guidance.

Chinese

Chinese will be a bespoke curriculum based on the National G10 curriculum. As a Chinese pupil, learning about Chinese literature, history, and culture can help them gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of their own heritage, as well as a broader perspective on the world.

Maths

Chinese pupils have a relatively strong background in mathematics, but as their previous language of study was Chinese, they can use CAIE's additional maths curriculum as their main focus for the year in order to better articulate with the A-level programme that follows. Pupils will use this time to fill in knowledge gaps, language gaps and to enhance critical thinking skills.

English

We will draw on Wellington College Tianjin's experience to give pupils a tailor-made English programme. This programme focuses on pupils' ability to acquire English language, thus helping them to be able to study a number of subjects in English in their future A-level courses.

Global Perspectives

Having a Global Perspectives subject can benefit pupils by providing a comprehensive understanding of different cultures, values, and perspectives from around the world. The course also broadens their horizons, enhances critical thinking skills, and prepares them for higher education and career opportunities in a globalized world. Furthermore, studying a Global Perspectives course can prepare pupils to address global issues and challenges and make informed decisions as they navigate a rapidly changing world. In addition, this is another way to improve children’s English acquisition.

Chemistry

Similar to Maths, we will use the IGCSE Chemistry as a basis for this programme. It will not only bridge the knowledge gap, but also prepare pupils to make a formal transition to their future A-level courses. We will also focus more on pupils' ability to design experiments, operate experiments and analyse data, thus developing their scientific literacy. Chemistry will be a compulsory subject for all pupils.

Wellbeing/University Guidance

Our wellbeing programme will focus on the following areas: resilience and independence; physical and mental health, self-awareness and social-emotional competence. In addition, this time will be also used for university guidance. Pupils will receive comprehensive advice on their career path, courses and jobs that enable them to make a proper and informed choice.

In addition to the opening of Grade 10 this September, Huili School Nantong has now fully launched its scholarship programme to recognise pupils with outstanding academic performance and all-round development, as well as outstanding pupils with musical and sporting talents .

Generation Z has been given the spirit of openness, tolerance and innovation, and is set to become the backbone of society. We hope to help them make good choices at this key moment, so that in the future they can lead China on the international stage and write the next chapter of the great renaissance of the Chinese nation.
