Summer is here: an ideal time to unwind from our busy schedules and responsibilities, but also to have fun, spend time with family and friends and pursue hobbies that we were unable to do during the rest of the year. In this regard, summer is a super opportunity for pupils to dive into great books and dedicate some time to reading together as a family. Here are some suggestions from our Head Librarian, Marta Monforte Perez.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

By Eric Carle

Our caterpillar is very hungry after hatching from an egg. From Monday to Friday, he eats a variety of fruits. But he is still hungry! He decides to have a feast, but he gets a stomach ache afterwards. On Sunday, he decides to eat only a leaf, but he feels much better. He is no longer a tiny and hungry caterpillar but a big and satisfied one!

This beloved picture book, written and illustrated by Eric Carle, is a children’s classic. With this simple story, pupils will learn the colours, the days of the week, the numbers and healthy eating too! With colourful pictures and beautiful art, pupils and families will be captivated by this timeless classic.

Elmer

By David McKee

Elmer, a bright-coloured patchwork elephant, is different from the rest of the other elephants who are constantly laughing at him. When Elmer discovers a bush in the jungle with elephant-coloured berries and rolls in a berry mash until he is the same colour as the other elephants, the other elephants no longer laugh. Elmer finally discovers that it is funny to be different!

This beloved fable teaches pupils diversity, acceptance and the power of laughter. Definitely, a must-read for our Nursery pupils.

Fantastic Mr. Fox

By Roald Dahl

Three cruel farmers devise a plan to stop Mr Fox, who has been stealing food for his hungry family. Will the farmers be successful, or will they be tricked by the intelligence of our protagonist?

This fabulous story, written by one of the most celebrated English children’s authors of all time, will tug at the heart of our Primary students. Ideal for a read-aloud or independent reading, pupils will love Mr Fox’s story. This Roald Dahl classic will serve as a starting point to introduce the author to our pupils and all his other unforgettable stories such as Matilda or James and the Giant Peach.

Percy Jackson has always been different and not only because his ADHD and dyslexia and the fact he is being expelled from all his schools. We could not finish our recommended list without one of the best well-known fantasy series for the Junior High pupils. In this fast-paced novel, your children will be introduced to Greek mythol-ogy, and with a touch of humour, they will be immersed in a fascinating series.
