Wellington College China celebrated another important milestone - on 21 May, Huili School Nantong held a grand celebration to mark the 100-day countdown to its opening. After more than three years of preparation and hard work, from groundbreaking and capping to completion of the main building, with the cooperation and support of the Wellington College China community, Huili School Nantong is now ready to embark on its inaugural year.

Joy Qiao

Founder and Chairman

Wellington College China

"Although we faced the challenge of recurring epidemics earlier this year, I am grateful that the Nantong government and the Suxitong Science and Technology Industrial Park gave us full support, with the concerted efforts of the Wellington College China team, Huili School Nantong will be open on schedule in September. China has become a key player on the world stage, our pupils will learn about our country’s great achievements so they can become bridges from China to the rest of the world."

Simon Kenworthy

Master

Huili School Nantong

"Today signifies that in only 100 days, we will be opening a premium, world-class bilingual school here in Nantong. It will have pupils moving through the campus greeting each other and slowly building the respectful and kind Huili community. They will be studying in two languages and trying new sports and activities. In short, they will be starting on that journey of fulfilling their potential."

Purpose-built for holistic education

Wellington College China brings more than a decade of experience in school development to this new endeavour. The school has been built according to the WCC Campus Design Manual, which provides specifications for every aspect of the built environment from architecture and interior design landscape and playgrounds.

Pupils’ health and safety are, of course, top priorities for us. We have therefore implemented tight control in construction materials. Furniture meets international certification standards. Ventilation systems will filter out PM 2.5 particles and will be replaced at least twice each term. The campus will also feature a comprehensive security system aided by video surveillance, access control, visitor management, alarms and wireless patrol systems.

The campus is purpose-built to facilitate Huili’s holistic education provision. It will comprise 11 functional structures, including teaching buildings, multi-functional buildings, a theatre, dormitories, libraries, indoor sports halls, swimming pools and football and rugby pitches.

As the group's flagship boarding school, Huili School Nantong will be able to accommodate 800 pupils over seven floors in two interconnected buildings. Pupils have the option of boarding from year 1 onwards. Boarders will have access to multiple common areas including quiet reading spaces, study areas and space for a wide range of games and activities. Here they will form lifelong friendships and cultivate the independence and resilience to succeed in the world.

Each phase of the school, from Nursery to Senior High School will have a dedicated building. These will feature spacious, open learning environments equipped with state-of-the-art education technologies. Our two libraries support our pupils’ independent learning with a wealth of English and Chinese-language media. Work areas will also facilitate group discussions and collaborations on projects.

The arts and sports are essential components of holistic education. There is perhaps no clearer expression of their importance at Huili School Nantong than our standalone theatre.  It is built for an audience capacity of 600, and its 200-square-metre stage is suitable for a wide range of musical and dramatic performances. Pupils will have the opportunity to put on high-quality productions using professional-grade sound and lighting systems and even an orchestra pit. For rehearsals and class instruction as well as smaller, more intimate performances, there is the Black Box Theatre, which is also fitted out with professional recording facilities. Meanwhile, our world-class facilities will be able to accommodate a wide variety of sporting pursuits such as football, basketball, volleyball and badminton, but also covers a wide range of facilities required for co-curricular activities. Our campus will feature two swimming pools, one for our youngest learners, and the other for more advanced swimmers.
